Is life a dance? Is the human body the best picture of the human soul?
Explore these questions with the dancers of Contemporary Ballet of Pennsylvania (COBALT). COBALT will be performing a special concert called “Human Nature,” beginning November 30th at the Stahr Armory, 438 N Queen St., Lancaster PA. This exciting show features a vivid program of new works by the region’s most promising choreographers who have used emotions, places, and glimpses of natural world as inspiration in expressing their own unique visions.
COBALT Artistic Director Shari Vegso-Wilson has created several works exploring the relationship of form and informality using both neoclassic ballet and contemporary technique. Her playful piece “Zoology,” set to children’s music by Carl Orff, features a series of dance studies based on animals and the landscape while “Heaven,” a duet, is physically about lifts and falls and reads emotionally of hope and loss. Kristin Pontz, whose works have dazzled Lancaster-area audiences at choreography showcases, has created a breathtakingly athletic work of short narrative dances set in the different rooms of a home. Heather Bare, a noted professional dancer and choreographer has undertaken a very personal expression of conflict and strife. Rebecca Geiger and Rachel Arthaud have also created works for the program, including two cleverly structured improvisations.
These exceptional works have challenged the dancers in every way and have pushed the abilities of this young company to new heights. As Vegso-Wilson explains, “So many people think of dance only in terms of stale classics or over-the -top competitions. We invite you to come see for yourself: dance can be a vivid, engaging art form that speaks directly to your heart and mind.”
COBALT is a non-profit, pre-professional dance company with dancers from York and Lancaster area that melds classical ballet and modern dance. They “put a new spin on an old form” says Lancaster Intelligencer Journal. COBALT’s mission is to create and perform dance works of integrity and sophistication that resonate with the audience.
