Brecht’s epic drama is set in the 1600s during Europe’s Thirty Years’ War. Trudging from country to country with her wagon of goods behind her, Mother Courage makes her living off of that war. Strong and fiercely pragmatic, she seeks to keep herself and her three children alive. Described by one critic as “every young soldier’s mother and Halliburton rolled into one,” Courage manages to survive, but she is unable to escape the personal devastations of war. This new adaptation by British playwright David Hare provides a fresh, vital, and often surprisingly humorous take on Brecht’s powerful masterpiece.
