Adapted by Ingmar Bergman from Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House
English translation by Frederick J. Marker and Lise-Lone Marker
Directed by Gary Smith
Nora is legendary filmmaker Ingmar Bergman’s adaptation of Ibsen’s masterpiece, A Doll’s House. Keeping the original late 19th Century Norwegian setting, Bergman focuses on the central character of Nora who has committed a secret and dangerous act of forgery in order to save her husband’s life. As the secret unravels, Nora is forced to face the truth of her “perfect” marriage. Her journey towards self-awareness is as relevant and resonant today as it was when it first shocked audiences over a century ago.
