The Guys
by Anne Nelson
directed by William Eissler
Based on a true story that was written in just nine days, “The Guys” takes place in New York less than two weeks after the September 11th attack on the World Trade Towers. Nick is a fire captain who has lost most of his men in the attack. He is looking for a writer to help him with the eulogies he must present at their memorial services and contacts Joan, an editor. Nick and Joan spend a long afternoon together, recalling the fallen men through recounting their virtues and their foibles, and fashioning the stories into memorials of words. In the process, Nick and Joan discover the possibilities of friendship in each other and their shared love for the unconquerable spirit of the city. As they make their way through the emotional landscape of grief, they draw on humor, tango, the appreciation of craft in all its forms—and the enduring bonds of common humanity.
“The Guys” debuted off-Broadway only several blocks away from Ground Zero at The Flea Theatre starring Sigourney Weaver and Bill Murray in December 2001. The show struck a chord with New Yorkers and ran for 13 months to sold-out houses, which drew more than 12,000 people. Featured amongst the rotating cast were Sigourney Weaver, Bill Murray, Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins, Bill Irwin, Carol Kane, Amy Irving, and Anthony La Paglia. After closing, the show was then turned into a feature film starring Sigourney Weaver and Anthony La Paglia. Weaver won a Golden Satellite Award for her performance. Since 2001, the show has been presented in 48 U.S. States and in the Czech Republic, Argentina, Japan, Italy and Poland. In honor of the fifth anniversary of September 11th, “The Guys” returned to The Flea in September 2006 for a special run.

Under the Umbrella
by NetCo Dance Company
“Under the Umbrella” is a contemporary dance concert that was created and choreographed by NetCo Dance Company’s Artistic Director, Jennifer Cowan-Berlet. The show explores the hidden psychological truths and theories of Freud, Maslow & Jung, both demented and euphoric. These truths and theories explore themes such as the “Oedipus Complex” and sexual repression, and the Id Ego and Superego. Using a personal love of psychology as inspiration, Cowan-Berlet took on the challenge of creating a full-length concert that is one continuous string of movement with transitions that flow from one psychological theme to the next—reflective of how they do in life. Through movement and the use of a classical soundtrack, the show allows the audience to transcend the outward focus and all preconceived notions and attachments in order to revel in their visceral emotions. By using these theories and truths which are universal for every human, Cowan-Berlet uses the dark struggle of the “unconscious conflict” to create a story that reflects life using movement.
Part of the proceeds of the concert will go towards researching childhood schizophrenia. “I’ve decided to donate part of the proceeds to research psychological childhood disorders after seeing a special on the discovery channel. Children are such a gift to the entire world and I feel it’s up to those of us already on this earth to help give them the best start and continue to encourage them throughout their lives,” says Cowan-Berlet.
NetCo Dance Company is a non-profit dance company based out of Silver Spring Dance Conservatory, which was founded in 2000 by Jennifer Cowan-Berlet. NetCo specializes in modern/contemporary dance, but also excels in tap and hip-hop. Since 2000, the company has grown to incorporate up to 16 members. NetCo Dance Company is an active performer throughout the community. Cowan-Berlet started the company because she wanted to create an outlet for those who still have to work, run the house, and take care of the family but have that passion to dance. ”So many times we give up what is truly in our hearts because “other necessities” take priority, I wanted to give an outlet to those that will give themselves permission to relish in their passion.”

Shylock
by Mark Leiren-Young
“Shylock” tells Mark Leiren-Young’s award-winning play story of a Jewish actor, Jon Davies, who is an actor playing Shylock on the closing night of a production of William Shakespeare’s “The Merchant of Venice.” The production has been shut down amid protests that the play is anti-Semitic. Davies uses the scheduled talk-back session to defend the production, Shakespeare, and his own artistic choices. “Shylock” is an insightful play of ideas, which provides a provocative look at censorship, political correctness, and art.

3rd Annual Woman’s Work Breast Cancer Awareness Benefit Concert
Sponsored by American Cancer Society, NetCo Dance Company & Theater of the Seventh Sister
Held during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, this benefit concert is a fundraiser to help raise money for Breast Cancer Awareness. According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women in the United States with the chance of around every 1 in 8 women getting breast cancer in her lifetime. It has the second highest cancer caused mortality rate in women. However, due to increased detection and better treatment, the death rate is going down. By helping to increase breast cancer awareness through education, providing diagnostic breast care services, and providing nurturing support services, hopefully more women will have early detection and treatment and join over 2 ½ million women in the United States as breast cancer survivors.
The 3rd Annual Woman’s Work Breast Cancer Awareness Benefit Concert will showcase a diverse group of artists such as NetCo Dance Company, The Masonic Village Men’s Choir, MK Tap, Rev9 Dance Company, Jason Berlet from the famous Improvisation School “Second City” of Chicago, and a demonstration of seito kemmei kai by Katerina Kuss & Ben Delich. As well as dancing, singing, and comedy, there will be raffle prizes to win, trivia questions to answer and tasty treats to eat! There is plenty of fun for the whole family all in support of a very worthy cause.
